How to Prepare Your Floor for Urethane Floor Coatings

Crown Polymer urethane floor coatings provide long-lasting protection for your commercial and industrial floors. Using one of our quality coatings, however, is half the battle. Whether you are a contractor looking for one of our products to finish a project or a distributor trying to help out a customer, it is essential that the installer implements our coating the correct way. Proper installation ensures that the urethane coating will work as its intended. Below is a quick guide to help you get started. If you have any further questions on how to apply our commercial floor systems, then please contact us. We’re here to help.

Inspecting the Concrete Floor To See if It’s Ready

Before you begin, you’ll need to examine the garage floor to make sure that the surface is ready for the coating.

Repairs. You may need to repair the factory flooring before you can start the job.

Sealant & paint. Urethane floor coatings will not adhere to sealed or painted concrete. In that case, you may want to either remove the current seal/paint or install a concrete overlayment instead.

Signs of moisture. The next step is to conduct a test and inspect the surface for any signs of water or moisture. If the concrete is damp, then water is getting into the building. Look for mold, algae, or efflorescence that leave a white residue.

Clean the Concrete Floor

Once the floor is ready for the urethane coating, your next step is to clean the surface. A new floor will be free from greasy residue or oils. You’ll be able to clean it and be ready to implement the epoxy quickly. Use a pro-grade cleaner to remove oils, grease stains, chemical stains, glue, mastics, or tire stains. By removing all of these substances, you’ll allow the coating to adhere properly. Once you clean the floor, we recommend covering the walls with a thick plastic to protect them from the urethane floor coating.

Profiling the Concrete Surface

You can expose the pores, tiny cracks and other blemishes on the concrete floor. This step in the process is called profiling and is necessary so that the epoxy will fill in the pores and form a watertight bond. Although you can acid etch the floor, most professionals grind the surface to smooth out the pores and blemishes. Once the floor is etched or ground, run a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner over it to remove all the dust. Go over the floor again with a broom or a slightly damp mop to ensure that you removed all of the dust. Give the floor time to dry.

Complete All Concrete Floor Repairs

Repairing the floor is the most important step before applying the urethane floor coating. This step includes filling in all cracks and holes and smoothing out the entire surface. Make sure that it is free from bumps on the floor. If you are going for the seamless look, you’ll need to make sure the entire surface is free from all holes, cracks and bumps. It should be perfectly level and smooth from end to end. If you have performed extensive repairs to the floor, use additional color flakes to hide any imperfections in the concrete.

Your Flooring System is Now Ready to Coat

Once you have completed all of these steps and the floor is 100% dry, you are now ready to apply the urethane floor coating. Crown Polymers has the industrial or commercial floor coatings you need to get the look you want. Our epoxy is durable, easy to apply and can be used as a decorative floor coating no matter what type of building you are using it in.
